The Hanābilah

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم، الحمد لله رب العالمين وصلى الله وسلم وبارك على عبده ورسوله نبينا محمد وعلى آله وأصحابه أجمعين

Why a blog about the Hanābilah?

This is not a blog to promote any type of partisanship (تعصُّب) or fanatical adherence to a madh-hab.  This is a blog dedicated to presenting the works of those eminent pious scholars who stood up for and promoted the strict obedience to the Qur’ān and Sunnah from the time of the Salaf as-Sālihīn (سلف صالحين) up to today.

The Hanābilah (حنابلة plural for Hanbalī) are not just a madh-hab in Fiqh, rather they represent the madh-hab of sticking to the narrations (الاثار) in Aqīdah.  The Hanābilah are known for their strict adherence to the dalā’il (دلائل  evidences) in Fiqh.  As al-‘Alāmah  ‘AbdulQādir Ibn Badrān ad-Dimishqī رحمه ﷲ wrote:

“From the main strengths of the madh-hab of Imām Ahmad رحمه ﷲ is its firm reliance upon the proofs first and foremost before anything else.” [al-madkhal ilā madh-hab Imām Ahmad bin Hanbal]

The Hanābilah were and are known for their strict opposition to bid’ah (بدعة innovation in the religion).  As al-Hāfidh Ibn Kathīr رحمه ﷲ said:

“It’s extremely difficult for the people of Bid’ah to live in a place where there are a lot of Hanābilah” [al-Bidāyah wa-Nihāyah]

The Hanābilah were distinguished due to their zuhd (زهد detachment from the worldly life and love for the hereafter).  This is what the renowned historian Imām adh-Dhahabī ash-Shafi’ī رحمه ﷲ wrote about them:

“The Hanābilah would excel in knowledge and stick to the narrations, they would love to immerse themselves in ‘Ibādah (عبادة worship) and be from the people of Zuhd.  They would run away from fame and would never be at the doorsteps of the kings and the wealthy.” [Zaghl-ul-‘Ilm]

This is why they were known to be few in number, as Abu al-Wafā Ibn ‘Aqīl al-Hanbalī رحمه ﷲ said:

“The Hanbalī Madh-hab has been oppressed by the Hanābilah themselves. Whenever one of the Hanābilah became known to excel in knowledge, he would submerge himself in ‘Ibādah and gratitude to Allāh, embrace Zuhd and divorce himself from fame, status and worldly life.”

Hence this is a blog dedicated to bringing forward works of these illustrious scholars in the light of the Qur’ān and Sahīh Ahādīith.  We ask Allāh سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى to bless this effort and make it a benefit for the entire ummah.

mashaa’-Allaah brother you have opened up a door to much khayr. The hanaabilah were and are the flag bearers for the sunnah and many people are unaware of the great history and service they did for aqeedah. The noble scholars of our time also tread this path but people are unaware. The people of bidah have and do wish for the hanaabilah to finish so that they can be free to promote their falsehood but the hanaabilah stand in their way.

Mashallah I gotta say this was way overdue. A website to represent the great Hanabilah who defended the Islamic Aqidah throughout history. Too many fake Sufis claiming to be Hanbalis on the net. May Allah bless you.

  9. Sajid Mahmood Al-Hanbali says:

Jazakumullahu Khaira for launching a website based om Imam Ahmad’s Madh-ab. If you upload short Hanbali Books in English, like Zadul Murabea ( Shikh Mansoor bin Younus al-Buhuti) , it will be a great favour of you on Hanbalis, who cant understand Arabic.
