Al-Muharrar fī Fiqh

An-Nukat wal-Fawā’id as-Saniyyah ‘alā Mushkil al-Murrar li-Majdi-Dīn Ibn Taymiyyah

Al-Murrar, the famous classic text of the Ḥanābilah written by the great scholar of Islām, Abū Barakāt Majd-ud-dīn Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله.

About the Author: Shaikh al-Islām Majd-ud-dīn Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله was the grandfather of the famous Shaikh al-Islām Taqī-ud-Dīn Ibn Taymiyyah  رحمه الله and a great scholar in his own right.

He was a great Imām, the most knowledgeable person in  Usūl ul-Fiqh during his era, a established and well accredited scholar of Ḥadīth and the explanation of Ḥadīth.  He was especially well accomplished in terms of Qur’ānic recitations and Tafsīr.  He was the Imām of Harrān, and the leader of the Ḥanābilah there. He reached the highest level in Fiqh and is considered to be one of the two Shaikhs of the  Ḥanābilah ( الشيخان ’Shaikhān’ meaning the two greatest scholars).  The other being  Shaikh al-Islām Muwaffaq ad-dīn Ibn Qudāmah  رحمه الله.

The famous scholar of Arabic language, the grammarian Jamāl al-Dīn Ibn Mālik  رحمه الله, author of the famous grammar poem al-Alfiyyah Ibn Mālik said about him:

“To the Shaikh al-Majd, Fiqh was made easy, as to Dāwūd عليه السلام iron was made easy”

Imām ad-Dhahabī رحمه الله praised him with the title of Shaikh al-Islām for his era and called him a reliable narrator in Ḥadīth, a Imām in Fiqh, a Zāhid in Dunya and leader of the Muslims. He never feared the kings or his enemies in speaking the truth.

Shaikh ‘AbdulAzīz bin Bāz رحمه الله recommended the reading of his books when he said:

“ I advise you to review the beneficial books of the people of knowledge such as al-Muntaqā by Majd-ud-Dīn”

He authored many beneficial books including, but not limited to, the following:

His masterpiece in Fiqh is the topic of discussion here, al-Muharrar fī Fiqh ‘alā madh-hab al-Imām Ahmad bin Hanbal رحمه الله.

About the Book: Al-Muharrar fī Fiqh is a unique and valuable matn in Fiqh.  The unique style of writing of Imām Majd-ud-dīn رحمه الله gives multiple opinions for each issue but only from within the Ḥanbalī madh-hab.   Imām Majd-ud-dīn رحمه الله does not give preference to any opinion, rather leaves that for the one teaching the student to explain preferences with supporting dalā’il (دلائل  evidences) from the Kitāb of Allāh and the Sunnah of Rasūlullāh صلى الله عليه و سلم. This style of writing provides a teacher with great flexibility when teaching an intermediate level class.

There are many classic and contemporary commentaries written on al-Muharrar.  One of the most valuable is ”an-Nukat wal-Fawā’id as-Saniyyah ‘alā Mushkil al-Murrar li-Majdi-Dīn Ibn Taymiyyah” by the great scholar of Islām, al-Imām Abū ‘Abdullāh Shamus-ud-dīn Muhammad Ibn Muflih al-Ḥanbalī رحمه الله.

The unique and valuable aspect about this commentary is that Ibn Muflih al- Ḥanbalī رحمه الله was a direct and close student of the famous scholar Shaikh al-Islām Taqī-ud-dīn Ibn Taymiyyah  رحمه الله.  Taqī-ud-dīn Ibn Taymiyyah was the grandson Majd-ud-dīn Ibn Taymiyyah.  Ibn Muflih  رحمه الله does an amazing job of explaining the different opinions within the  Ḥanābilah and constantly presents the views of his teacher, the great Ḥanbalī scholar Taqī-ud-Dīn Ibn Taymiyyah  رحمه الله.  This style of writing allows the student of knowledge to benefit from the work of the grandfather Majd-ud-dīn Ibn Taymiyyah, the grandson    Taqī-ud-dīn Ibn Taymiyyah, with lots of valuable comments from Ibn Muflih رحمة الله تعالى عليهم أجمعين.

All of this supported by lots and lots of dalā’il (دلائل  evidences) to show preferences on each issue, makes this book a must have for any serious student of knowledge wanting to study the  Ḥanbalī madh-hab.

Last but not least, I want to mention that this publication has the tahqīq by the renowned muhaqīq, ash-Shaikh ‘Abdullah bin ‘AbdulMuhsin at-Turkī حفظه الله. He is by far one of the greatest scholars of tahqīq, especially when it comes to the books of the Ḥanābilah.
