One often observes the foolish dueling in the battlefields of online message boards whether Shaykh al-Islām Taqī-ud-Dīn Ibn Taymiyyah, al-Hāfidh Ibn Qayyim, Shaykh Muhammad Ibn ‘AbdulWahāb, Shaykh AbdulAzīz Ibn Bāz, Shaykh Muhammad Ibn al-‘Uthaymīn (رحمة الله عليهم) were Hanbalī or not. Unfortunately most of these adolescents arguing online have never seen any of these Shuyukh nor have they studied their works or even heard of many of their writings.
I (Abū Yūsuf ‘Uthmān Ibn Farūq) put this question to ash-Shaykh Dr. Sādiq al-Mannā (حفظه الله), who studied 13 years in Umm al-Qurā University in Makkah al-Mukarramah and received his bachelors, then his masters and finally in his PhD in Islāmic sciences (Tafsīr and Hadīth). He was a direct student of major Shuyukh, such as Shaykh AbdulAzīz Ibn Bāz, Shaykh Muhammad Ibn al-‘Uthaymīn and other scholars from as-Su’ūdīyah for over 30 years.
Following is a translation of the attached MP3 recording.
Question: Shaykh Sādiq al-Mannā , I have a question, since you studied, Mashā’Allāh, in Umm al-Qurā and you received your doctorate in Tafsīr and Hadīth and you studied under Shaykh AbdulAzīz Ibn Bāz and (Shaykh) Ibn al-‘Uthaymīn and other scholars from as-Su’ūdīyah and Najd. What is your opinion about Shaykh Ibn ‘AbdulWahāb, Shaykh al-Islām Taqī-ud-Dīn Ibn Taymiyyah, Shaykh Ibn Qayyim, Shaykh AbdulAzīz Ibn Bāz, (Shaykh) Ibn al-‘Uthaymīn with regards to their madh-hab in Fiqh? Do they follow a madh-hab or not?
Answer: In the name of Allāh, all praise is due to Allāh and the peace and blessing of Allāh be upon Rasūlullah. With the help of Allāh and a bounty from Him, I studied in Makkah al-Mukarramah in Umm al-Qurā University for 13 years, first I received my bachelors, then my masters and then my PhD in the knowledge of the Kitāb (Qur’ān) and Sunnah, meaning in Tafsīr and Hadīth. And I benefited from and took knowledge from the Mashāykh and ʿUlamā’ there such as, Shaykh ‘Abdullāh Ibn Humayd, who was the Muftī of the land of Su’ūdīyah, he is the father of Shaykh Sālih (Ibn ‘Abdullāh Ibn Humayd) the Imām of the Haram al-Makkī, and Shaykh Ibn Bāz and Shaykh Ibn al-‘Uthaymīn and Abū Bakr Jābir al-Jazā’irī and many of the scholars of Najd and they are upon the madh-hab of Imām Ahmad bin Hanbal, Imām Ahlus-Sunnah. And we study the Hanbalī madh-hab in our universities in as-Su’ūdīyah, such as Imām Sa’ūd University (Riyadh), Islāmic University of al-Madinah al-Munawwarah and Umm al-Qurā University in Makkah al-Mukarramah, and the books of the Hanbalī madh-hab are taught there. They are upon this madh-hab yet it should be known that it was said about Imām Ahmad bin Hanbal that he was greatest advocate of strict adherence to the Sunnah, hence his madh-hab is also strictly dedicated to sticking to the Sunnah. And Imām Ibn Taymiyyah, Imām Ibn Qaiyyam, who was his student and Ibn Rajab al-Hanbalī, who was his student and Ibn kahir who was also a student of Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمة الله عليهم), were all upon the madh-hab of Imām Ahlus-Sunnah , Imām Ahmad bin Hanbal (رحمة الله). And who ever says other then this, he does not know the reality and it does not befit him to speak about what he does not know about. Rather it is upon him to research and know the truth and then speak about it.
And peace be upon Muhammad and his family and upon the Sahābah all of them.
